  5. acidic resins, arsenic residues, residual
  6. hardening salts, lead, mercury, nonferrous
  7. sludges, organic solvents, and pesticides.
  8. Their economic disposal or recycling is the
  9. subject of research. Britain now imports over
  10. 200,000 tonnes of hazardous chemical waste a
  11. year. About 130,000 tonnes of the annually
  12. imported wastes are `land-filled' (disposed
  13. of in dumps) without pre-treatment.
