Waste substances, usually generated by
industry, which represent a hazard to the
environment or to people living or working
nearby. Examples include radioactive wastes,
acidic resins, arsenic residues, residual
hardening salts, lead, mercury, nonferrous
sludges, organic solvents, and pesticides.
Their economic disposal or recycling is the
subject of research. Britain now imports over
200,000 tonnes of hazardous chemical waste a
year. About 130,000 tonnes of the annually
imported wastes are `land-filled' (disposed
of in dumps) without pre-treatment.
